چکیده

A time-of-flight mass spectrometric study of the prompt and metastable decomposition of ions produced by “‘Cf fission fragment bombardment is presented. Results for a series of polypeptides with molecular weights between 1000 and 14000 u are given. Comparisons are made between the amount of fragmentation observed in ions desorbed from bulk (electrosprayed) polypeptide samples and the amount of fragmentation observed in the corresponding ions desorbed from polypeptides bound to nitrocellulose. Ions desorbed from nitrocellulose were found to undergo much less decomposition than those desorbed from bulk polypeptide. Details of the slow unimolecular decay of high molecular weight multiply protonated polypeptides were investigated for the first time. The metastable decomposition of multiply protonated polypeptides was found to occur, in substantial part, with the formation of two charged fragmentation products.

Ion/ion chemistry of high-mass multiply charged ions.

Electrospray ionization has enabled the establishment of a new area of ion chemistry research based on the study of the reactions of high-mass multiply charged ions with ions of opposite polarity. The multiple-charging phenomenon associated with electrospray makes possible the generation of multiply charged reactant ions that yield charged products as a result of partial neutralization due to i...

Fragmentation of multiply charged simple metal clusters in liquid-drop stabilized jellium model

In this work, we have used the liquid-drop model in the context of stabilized jellium model, to study the stability of Z-ply charged metal clusters of different species against fragmentation. We have shown that on the one hand, singly ionized clusters are stable against any spontaneous fragmentation, and on the other hand, the most favored decay process for them is atomic evaporation. However, ...

Simplifying fragmentation patterns of multiply charged peptides by N-terminal derivatization and electron transfer collision activated dissociation.

N-terminal peptide derivatization strategies used in conjunction with tandem mass spectrometry to yield simplified fragmentation patterns have shown limited success for the de novo sequencing of multiply charged peptides, including those predominantly formed in LC-ESI-MS experiments. Significant proton mobilization occurs for multiply charged peptides upon collisional activation, resulting in t...

Recent developments in the ion/ion chemistry of high-mass multiply charged ions.

The ability to form multiply charged high-mass ions in the gas-phase, most notably via electrospray ionization (ESI), has allowed the study of many different combinations of positively and negatively charged ions. The charged products are directly amenable to study with mass spectrometry. Ion/ion reactions have proved to be "universal" in the sense that the high exothermicities and large rate c...

Fragmentation of singly, doubly, and triply charged hydrogen deficient peptide radical cations in infrared multiphoton dissociation and electron induced dissociation.

Gas phase fragmentation of hydrogen deficient peptide radical cations continues to be an active area of research. While collision induced dissociation (CID) of singly charged species is widely examined, dissociation channels of singly and multiply charged radical cations in infrared multiphoton dissociation (IRMPD) and electron induced dissociation (EID) have not been, so far, investigated. Her...
